There is a crisis of confidence in contemporary democracies. The governments of the United Kingdom, France, Germany, South Korea, to name a few examples, are unable to cobble together a stable government, as the voters are split between hard right and hard left. Voters are expressing their frustration with the powers that be, as seen in the outcome of the current elections in the USA.
Plus ca change, plus ca meme chose--the greater the change-the more it is the same. The ancient Greeks and Hebrews struggled with maintaining stable governments, and history repeats itself.
Therefore, this essay, on the inherent instability of parliamentary systems of democracy, written by my father in 1928, written 10 years before the rise of Hitler, is a warning for us all. See below:
US House of Representative to vote on the 61 bln dollars military aid for struggling and fighting Ukraine in a separated vote among the 95 bln. legislative packages of the other foreign aid.
Ukrainian Army is outnumbered and out armed versus the army of the Russian Federation. Putin's military arsenal seems unlimited and has grown significantly since the end of the Cold War.
Speaker Johnson finally realized, regardless to the radical Republican opposition that doing right things is what is expected of elected politicians.
Johnson spoke in this regard:
Opinion: Atlantic Council:
Millions of Ukrainians watched with mixed emotions over the weekend as a coalition of countries came together to protect Israeli airspace from Iranian bombardment. Ukraine’s reaction was hardly surprising. After all, this impressive display of international air defense efficiency was exactly what the Ukrainians themselves have been pleading for ever since Russia’s full-scale invasion of their country began in February 2022.
In the aftermath of the operation to defend Israel, Western officials moved quickly to reject any direct comparisons with Ukraine. “Different conflicts, different airspace, different threat picture,” commented US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby. UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron was even more explicit, stating that the use of British jets to shoot down Russian drones in Ukraine would lead to a “dangerous escalation” in the war.
For Ukrainian audiences, Cameron’s anti-escalation argument was all too familiar. For the past two years, Ukraine’s Western partners have sought to strike a delicate balance between aiding the country’s self-defense and avoiding anything that could lead to a wider European war. This overriding fear of escalation has shaped the Western response to Russia’s invasion, and has been masterfully exploited by Putin to restrict military support for Ukraine.
Our Opinion: The Ukrainians inevitably see the double-standards. The fear of escalation had been prevailing in the West. Advices not to target the Russian oil refineries and military objects in the Russian territory are in stark contrast with unlimited Russian air strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure and civilian target. Israel is not a member of NATO, but foreign military bases in the Middle East activated and employed air defense to down the Iranian drones and rockets flying over foreign air space.
Two wars, to approaches and a clear geopolitical reason: no escalation needed with the nuclear military Power controlled by the dictatorial regime.

July 24, 2024: President Biden, address from the Oval Office: "He passes the torch"
Our comment: nicely put, but it was not the only reason https://www.facebook.com/reel/1016349656563720
“By surrendering the power that he once hoped to keep,” writes David Frum, “Biden condemned by contrast the predecessor who clung to the power he’d lost”
In his address to explain why he was relinquishing power, the president marked himself as a modern Cincinnatus—and his Republican rival as a new Catiline.
From the Atlantic:
The Trump campaign was engineered in every way to beat Joe Biden. Now it must be completely reinvented, Tim Alberta writes.
Alberta spent months talking with Trump’s campaign managers, Chris LaCivita and Susie Wiles, who said they were readying contingency plans and studying the weaknesses of would-be alternatives, beginning with Vice President Kamala Harris—should Biden drop out of the race. “By the time of the debate, however, they believed that Democrats’ window had all but closed. Even in the immediate aftermath—as Democratic officials openly called for Biden to quit—Wiles and LaCivita were betting on the status quo,” Alberta writes. “They know that from the moment they partnered with Trump, everything they intended for this campaign—the messaging, the advertising, the microtargeting, the ground game, the mail pieces, the digital engagement, the social-media maneuvers—was designed to defeat Joe Biden. Even the selection of Ohio’s Senator J. D. Vance as Trump’s running mate, campaign officials acknowledged, was something of a luxury meant to run up margins with the base in a blowout rather than persuade swing voters in a nail-biter.”
At 59, Harris, should she become the nominee, will have no trouble keeping up with Trump on the campaign trail or the debate stage, Alberta writes. “At the very least, Trump’s lieutenants realize, Harris’s promotion will provide a desperately needed jolt to Democrats nationwide in the form of fundraising, volunteerism, and enthusiasm.”
“The mentality of this Trump campaign, LaCivita once told me, is to spend every day on offense. The team wants to shape the pace and substance of every news cycle and force Democrats to react, ensuring that key battles are fought on the GOP’s chosen terrain,” Alberta continues at the link in our bio. “It worked so well that Biden was ruined before his party’s convention. Now the Trump operation is vowing to destroy Harris—if, in fact, she becomes the nominee—in much the same way. And yet, for a campaign that went to bed Saturday believing that it would dictate the terms of the election every day until November 5, Sunday brought an unfamiliar feeling of powerlessness.”
