Dear friend,
The Institute for the Studies of Galicia is a non-profit research institute.
We are new, small, and underfunded research organization.
We have, in a short time, been abke to bring to light our innovative, non-traditional and revealing research: monographs, essays, and reviews.
About us and our program:
Why the Institute for the Studies of Galicia or who we are not.
The Institute studies Ukrainian-Jewish political parallels focusing on the two historical periods: the Austrian constitutional era (1867-1914) and the interwar period (1918-1939) of the Second Polish Republic.
Events of this time that were taking place in former Eastern Galicia continue to reverberate through geopolitical developments in the course of 20th and 21st century. The nowadays Ukrainian unprecedented struggle against the aggression of the Russian Federation exemplifies a recurring historical discourse. Epistemic context of Ukrainian, Jewish, and Polish historical experience remains a relevant subject for multi-disciplinary studies.
It is our mission to offer the narratives built on the premise of ethnonational, social, and political interactions in conjunction with consequential personal discontents. In this respect, the Institute also initiates a contextual analysis and public discussions of well acclaimed literary and cinematographic works drawn on Galician historical and cultural heritage.
Our primary collective institutional Project : Ukrainian-Jewish Parallels: Eastern Galicia, 1867 - 1939.
The Projectcovers the following themes:
- Demythologizing embellishments, clichés, and ideological motifs in historical narratives of Galician context;
- Historicizing and contextualizing societal developments in respect to Ukrainian, Jewish, and Polish responses to the regional and geopolitical challenges;
- Interpretation, interpolation, and triangulation of the determinative to each national Galician community driving ideological forces in terms of unbiassed historical methodology;
- Introducing Polish, Jewish, and Ukrainian literary pursuits as a parallel reality when compared to the world of Galician politics. The Galician cultural milieu integrated Polish, Jewish, and Ukrainian cultural componentsdespite mutually conflicting politics.
And the last but not least: the Idea of the Institute is to complement the current synthesis of the Galician macro-history by adding a series of microhistories highlighting societal and personal existential situations.
The micro historical narrative provides substantiation to the ideological transition from the 19th century motto "We found this Land" to the 20th century appeal: "It is also our Land!"
The Institute is offering a series of seminars and discussions on the related cultural topics.
We have published a series of essays on our website, scholarly journals, Academia.edu corroborating our approach and methodology.
Our young, recently established Institute is developing by our own personal efforts, with a substantial scientific background and commitment to mission.We have crdeated a resource rich website equipped with:
- Online digital searchable archive of the Interwar Ukrainian, Jewish, and Polish periodical press (1918 -1939);
- Online catalog of historical resources comprising the 19th century rare publications, periodical press, and unique literary and scientific works.
Preserving the Past, struggling with the Present, and looking in the Future, we are kindly asking for financial support.
Please give your tax deductible donation to keep the Institute running and striving.
With kind regards,
Director, Dr. Volodymyr Melamed
President, Rabbi, Dr. Norbert Weinberg
