Implications of the 2022 Russo-Ukrainian War

About this section

RUSSO - UKRAINIAN WAR: UKRAINIAN EXISTENTIAL PREDICAMENT AND UNCERTAINTY  The Russo-Ukrainian war overwhelmingly undermined international geopolitical order. The Russian Federation has been implementing its everlasting imperial and expansionist doctrine, disguised with ‘a historic mission’ of protecting the so-called Pax Russica (Russian-ness, Ruskii Mir) in the former Soviet-era-incorporated and annexed ethno-national East-European entities. The internationally-recognized independence of these post-Soviet-era states (former Soviet republics) never have been a subject of serious consideration for the Russian Federation. It pursued a preferred a pattern of “fraternal” client-states which would prospectively not seek integration in European Union. The real Ukrainian sovereignty meant de facto independence from Russia and as such by no means would fit with the criteria set the contemporaneous Russian expansionism.

Anne Applebaum writes in the Atlantic:

"It’s not too late, because it’s never too late. No outcomes are ever preordained, nothing is ever over, and you can always affect what happens tomorrow by making the right choices today. The U.S. Congress is finally making one of those right choices. Soon, American weapons and ammunition will once again start flowing to Ukraine.

But delays do have a price. By dawdling for so many months, by heading down the blind alley of border reform before turning back, congressional Republicans who blocked weapons and ammunition for Ukraine did an enormous amount of damage, some of it irreparable. Over the past six months, Ukraine lost territory, lives, and infrastructure. If Ukraine had not been deprived of air defense, the city of Kharkiv might still have most of its power plants. People who have died in the near-daily bombardment of Odesa might still be alive. Ukrainian soldiers who spent weeks at the front lines rationing ammunition might not be so demoralized."

The Ukrainian army’s advance into Russia has profound implications for perceptions of the war. It directly challenges the widespread belief that Russia’s invasion has reached a stalemate and can no longer be decided on the battlefield. Crucially, it also exposes the emptiness of Vladimir Putin’s red lines and the folly of the West’s emphasis on escalation management.

Ukrainian combat forces conduct military operations in the Russian territory.

Geolocated footage and Russian claims indicate that Ukrainian forces continued rapid advances further into Kursk Oblast on August 8, and Ukrainian forces are reportedly present in areas as far as 35 kilometers from the international border with Sumy Oblast. Ukrainian forces most certainly do not control all of the territory within the maximalist extent of Russian claims about Ukrainian advances in Kursk Oblast
